Create your own stomping and tearing kick drum samples and rhythms with the Erica Synths Hexinverter Mutant BD9, a 13 HP Eurorack drum synth module. This take on the legendary 909 combines the vibe of the original drum machine with voltage-controlled distortion to deliver enhanced texture, impact, and versatility. The primary analog VCO offers classic 909-esque booming bass drums but can also be switched to a square wave for more aggressive, attacking electronic kicks.

  • The primary analog VCO offers classic 909 inspired bass drums but can also be switched to generate a square wave bass drum.
  • The pitch of the VCO spans several octaves, from ~30 to 240 Hz, and can be modulated with voltage control (VC).
  • A novel Pitch Decay circuit allows adjustment of the duration and amount of the pitch-modulation envelope applied to the bass drum, from quick blips to tom-like sweeps.
  • The Amplitude Decay provides control of the length of the bass drum, from short punchy kicks to massive booms. This parameter is voltage-controlled, with a snappy CV response time, allowing modulation of the duration of kicks step by step on the sequence. 
  • The Click generator manages the attack intensity of the BD9. The level of this effect is adjustable to a fairly dramatic range. 
  • A square wave sub-oscillator derived from the primary oscillator's pitch can be mixed in (manually or VC).
  • The overall timbre of the BD9 varies with the drive control from warm, analog bass drums at low settings to more aggressive, distorted sounds at high settings. Rather than having line-level outputs like typical drum machines, the BD9 sends stronger signal levels optimized for modular usage.
